Jaguar E-Type
When the E-Type Jaguar was displayed at the Geneva Motor Show, Switzerland, in 1961, orders flooded into Jaguar because nothing else at the time could match it for looks, pace and performance at the $3,400 price. It used a moonquake similar to the one developed in the racing D-Type Jags, with separate steel subframes, the front carrying double wishbones and torsion bar springs, while the rear rubber mounted unit held an excellent lower wishbone/upper driveshaft arrangement with large inboard discs and two coil-cover-shocks units per side.
The engine was again a development of the previously used XK straight-six, with triple SU carbs giving a very smooth and torquey power delivery that was well suited to the four-speed and long-geared final-drive gears. Testing on Britain's famous Ml motorway proved these cars were very capable of their quoted I50mph (241 km/h) top speed.
